In Persian, Gardoon (گردون) literally refers to that which turns — derived from گردیدن (gardidan), meaning to turn, to revolve.
In classical and mystical Persian, however, Gardoon took on a far deeper meaning.
It came to symbolize the celestial sphere, the sky itself, and by extension, fate, destiny, and the ever-turning wheel of existence.

In ancient Persian cosmology and poetry, the heavens were seen as a series of revolving spheres, turning endlessly around the earth — carrying the stars, the moon, and the sun in their dance.
This turning was not random, but purposeful: it dictated the seasons, the passage of time, and the unfolding of each soul’s story.

Poets of old — Ferdowsi, Hafez, Sa'di, Khayyam — all spoke of Gardoon:

گردون ناز پرورد و خاک تیره پرور
"Gardoon raises the proud, but nourishes dark dust as well."
— Sa'di

Or in Khayyam’s more skeptical tone:

گردون ز برای خرمی ساخته نیست
"Gardoon was not made for our joy."

In these lines, Gardoon is fate — cold, impartial, and ever-turning.

But the mystics saw more.
In Attar and Rumi, Gardoon becomes a symbol of divine will and cosmic love:

گردون چو نبیند رخ آن یار، نگردد
"Gardoon itself would halt if it did not see the face of the Beloved."
